Big Brand Theory

A few people on this site mentioned their love for minimalism, so I thought I’d share an article I saw about the redesign of some iconic soda and beer cans in the minimalist style. Malaysian designer, Ewan yap, redesigned several to try and achieve a look that is both “simple and refreshing, while still being completely recognizable”. I recognized most of them, but there were a few that I couldn’t be sure of. I think most of them do have a fresh, updated look, while some just look like the originals, with an overblown logo. Have a look at them and see what you think… Big-Brand-Theory-by-Ewan-Yap-1Big-Brand-Theory-by-Ewan-Yap-3

I agree that some of these just look like a logo that is too big. I think the coca-cola and pepsi ones are the most successful, just because they are the most recognizable. I’m not a big soda drinker, so there are a few of these designs that I wouldn’t know just by looking at the minimal design (the tiger one, the star one, the white stripe, the bronze and black one, etc.) Personally, I love minimalism. However, I think it should only be done when everyone knows what is being portrayed.

I really like the concept, but I agree that the logos on some of them are so big it’s difficult to tell what brand it is. I’d say some of the more successful ones are the Coke, Pepsi, and A&W cans.
