Wielding Language

I love that phrase.   It describes exactly what I would love to be able to do but can only appreciate in other people’s writing.  I know there are better ways to say whatever it is that I’m writing but the words never come to mind.  I search for words but they continue to allude me.  I’ve noticed that many, if not most, translated books use beautiful language.  Translators seem to look for the one word that translates an idea most accurately.  I read about 15 to 20 books a year, in many different genres and at least half of them are non-fiction.  Reading is not enough for me.  I need to look up every word I don’t know and use it for the next week every time that it would be appropriate and then maybe my writing vocabulary would increase.  How do you increase your vocabulary in your own writing?
