As we all probably know the Super Bowl XLII is this Sunday, Patriots vs. Giants. As a designer, watching the commercials that are aired throughout the game is intriguing and interesting to see new inventive ideas companies have created. One that has struck my attention several years in the past is the entertaining Budweiser® commercials. In 1995 as many may remember they came out with the frogs croaking “Bud”, “weis”, and “er”. They do a great job at straying from the tradition beer in a bar commercial and create very innovative and eye catching commercial. Last year’s Budweiser® commercial was as original as the last, titled “Steeling crabs”. The daring crabs out smart the humans and steal away the cooler of beers and begin worshiping Budweiser®. This is not only humorous but may make consumers think twice when leaving their beer unattended.
Not only does Budweiser® create humorous commercials, but they also have their sentimental commercials, attracting different crowds to drink their beer. Their commercial “American Dream” introduces the beer in a more family oriented environment. This sends a different message, making their beer seem like the “traditional” American beer where if viewers really knew what Budweiser® tasted like, they would never drink anything else. I have attached the links to each commercial at the bottom and look forward so see what this years commercial will be!

Being from Massachusetts and growing up in a Patriots and Red Sox house hold, this Sunday is practically a full-fledged holiday. Last year was a great game, especially with the set up and design of the half-time Prince show. Before now I would not have thought about the people and the great designers and artists who have to be there to set up and organize the half-time show. For some people the half-time show is more important than the game and even the commercials. Prince, who definitely reached out to a specific genre and crowd had an amazingly decorated and designed show that captivated the entire audience (whether you were a fan or not). The purples, the lights, the differently designed guitars he used for different songs, the fireworks- that is all design, that is what makes an artist you would never listen to interesting.
This year I believe Mary J. Blige, Alicia Keys and Jordan Sparks are going to be performing in one way or another and many people are really excited. Prince is known for his extravagant personality and performances but it’s interesting to compare that to other performances just like with the commercials. Will this years performer match up to that of Prince last year? Will the Dorito’s commercials be as strange and annoying as they were last year? So this year, pay attention to the design and the performers because there are number of artists and graphics who are in charge of designing and setting up this performance so that it’s fun and exciting for everyone watching- even crazy and preoccupied Patriot’s fans!
