Yeah I Studied Graphic Design…now I sell cars….

“Oh you study graphic design?  So did I in college” said the financing manager at the Ford dealership from which I bought my car two summers ago.  I have been fairly surprised by the amount of people that I have met who studied graphic design in college and don’t pursue it, or did only for a short amount of time out of college.  Now I know not everyone who graduates with a degree goes into that field immediately, or in some cases not at all, but I would suspect with such a vocationally oriented degree like graphic design that most people would go into the field, or at least one that is related to it.  Now, the financing manager isn’t the only encounter that I’ve had where I find former graphic design students completely strayed away from the field, just one of the more surprising scenarios.

This makes me both nervous and a little relieved.  It makes me nervous because I begin to get scared for myself.  Have I spent four years in college studying this specific field only to find out I’m not good enough to pursue it full time?  Sometimes that’s the thought that goes through my head, but is countered with “yeah, I probably am good enough, and with all of these people studying graphic design and not going into the field, competition is down…what a relief.”  Nonetheless I can only speculate what the future has in store for me as a designer but I’m pretty confident this is where I’m suppose to be.

The fear you have, is the same fear I have. I’m worried by the time that I graduate I will not be able to find a job in my field, or my portfolio is not good enough to get me a job with the competition that is out there in the world today. I have spoke to advisors and counselors about the issue, and many have assured me that some people don’t necessarily go into their field of study, and yet may even find a career in another field and become successful. I personally, have grown to a state where I just want to graduate college, and find a career no matter what field. Just as long as it gives me a stable income, and doesn’t make me miserable. As for you, I don’t think you should worry too much about the future. Just focus on the present and finishing your degree.
