All Things Sewell

Okay, so we all have our celebrity crushes.

For a 13-year-old singer, it may be Taylor Swift. For a 17-year-old basketball star, it may be Stephen Curry.

As for me, a 20-year-old graphic design student, my idol is Carolyn Sewell.

Before coming to Mason I did not have too many people I looked up to in this field, and the ones whose work I did get excited about were found in my history books. This all changed after taking typography last fall. We were given to complete a project in the style or inspired by an artist of our choice; but of course I couldn’t decide.

My professor pointed me in the direction of a young, local designer whose work was something that fell right in line with my own. Carolyn Sewell is basically a master of all things doodle! She incorporates many fun and quirky elements into her art, and is most known for her hand-lettering pieces.

After the project, I continued to stay up-to-date on all things Sewell. I was amazed by her ability to stay true to her particular style of art; she made herself nationally known by just following her passions. She also lives by the inspiring words, “Do what you love, and fortune will follow”, which I will live by for years to come.

Oh! And I actually got to meet her last semester when she spoke at an AIGA-Mason event.

Best. Day. EVER!

My own little piece of motivation. Carolyn autographed my project.

I remember when she spoke at the AIGA-Mason event! I don’t know much about her so when I read your post I had to go check out her work again. Her work is amazing and very inspiring to me as someone that loves typography. Her hand lettering is really amazing. Each piece has so much excitement. Also, it is so cool that you were able to get that picture with her!!I’m jealous 🙂

I remember you doing your typography project on her! It looked fabulous by the way, and was executed nicely to show her style. Looking more into her work, I absolutely adore her detailed doodles. She is a great artist to look up to. I am sure you will discover those quirky elements of your own and live to be a great artist yourself!

I can tell how clean and perfect the work were. Typography Class is one of the most important Art classes because from this class you can till what you like to do and what kind of style you prefer. Lucky you, that you know what you like and follow.
