McDonalds Goes Bike Friendly

Can I just say, that when I hear the word Mcdonalds, the last thing I think of is health. In fact, when I think of healthy and fast food in the same sentence, part of my brain wants to die a little bit. But apparently, with the new addition of McBike, that’s just what Mcdonalds plans on promoting with their new cycle-friendly packaging.

Designed by Tribal Buenos Aires, Argentina the new packaging has been launched in Copenhagen and Medellin Germany. Two places with a huge biking population. The new packaging is designed to hold a drink, fries and burger comfortably on the handlebar of a bike. Might I also add, that the color choices just happen to be my favorite colors (TOTALLY not biased or anything)…

With its success, McDonalds plans to pitch the idea to Tokyo and Amsterdam as a part of “healthier lifestyle”. WAIT. WHAT?!? Now, I am all for innovative and helpful designs, but I just can’t help but ask, “Why would you even think to promote health”? I just feel like they took the biggest turn into left field with that one. The packaging design is so creative and cool, it sells JUST. BY. ITSELF. They need to go back and re-think their marketing strategy because you’re not fooling us McDonalds!

I’ve got to agree with you that the design is absolutely stunning, and although the mint green is not a reoccurring McDonald’s color, the yellow and typeface still makes the brand recognizable. The logic to promote health pretty ridiculous though. I read an article that listed certain foods and how much you would need to exercise in order to just burn off that one food item. Ex: 1 slice of pizza = 65 min of moderate cycling… So basically you are ordering McDonalds, eating and cycling, just to burn off the McDonalds you just ordered. I’d still do it though…

From a design stand point, this is pretty awesome. Innovative, simplistic, chic in color choice and material. McDonalds is a multi-billion dollar company– they know what they are doing. In a world that is waking up to the horrors of fast food, they have to do everything in their power to promote a healthy, eco-friendly image. They’ve begun this with their health conscious menu items, fresh fruits and salads, and now this! Well played, McD’s.

this is a really nice idea and so creative, i loved the way they design the package though but one thing im worring about is that when people riding in a high speed it might hit on the floor.

Wow! I agree it feels odd that McDonalds, one of the biggest fast food corporations in the world, wants to market themselves as healthy. We see this marketing technique all the time in commercial advertising, and your right, they aren’t fooling anyone! I happen to really like this new packaging. The color and use of the bike illustration feels almost nostalgic. The hue of yellow that they chose is really deep and warm, close to being the color orange, which compliments the minty blue box well. However, I don’t know that I would trust that box enough to think that my food wouldn’t fall out from the bottom as I were riding my bike.
