Design Crimes: Self Care Edition



Attention designers:

With finals season coming up, we could all use a little guilt trip to help keep our eyes off netflix and back on the prize so we can get our work done AND sleep. If, in the last two months you have done any of the following, you are a criminal.

  • Staying awake for 24 hours or more.  This really shouldn’t need saying, but not sleeping messes you up. Just from sleep deprevation alone you can get disoriented, irrational, and even hallucinate. The neurons in your brain become less efficient at communicating with each other the longer you stay awake so at least take a power nap dude. There is a BIG difference between someone who got two hours of sleep and someone who got zero. Hint: if you’re losing track of time and cant tell how long you’ve been awake, you’ve been students-sleepingawake too long.
  • Forgetting to eat. Yes, to most people it sounds ridiculous, but there are those of us that regularly get so wrapped up in things that we completely forget to feed ourselves. It’s not funny, it’s a borderline eating disorder and you DO have time to get up from your desk and stuff some food in your face for 10 minutes.
  • Procrastination. We all do it. It’s a legendary bad habit in every field and design is no exception. Whether you’re just reading comics or cleaning your room, house, and neighborhood the real root of procrastination is fear. Fear of a difficult task, aversion to decision making, or simply dreading the shear workload are the things that really drive us to distraction. The only way to overcome this is sheer will-power, which unfortunately we often do not hove the desperation to summon until theating is hard barbiee last minute.
  • Letting yourself down. Turning it in late and accepting the penalty time and again. Turning in something, just anything, as long as you can just pass. You, as a designer, could have done better. Don’t tell me it doesn’t bother you to turn in anything less than your best work. All the others can be overcome, but this last one is the greatest design crime you can commit: losing your spirit. It’s what really tears people apart in the end. You need to keep your heart intact! If you have that and you can keep your will strong i believe we can get through this inky blackness together!

    Thank you so much for this! I have defiantly been feeling super over-whelmed and stressed and it has been really hard to gather up the motivation to finish all of my assignments. I recently gave myself a huge pep talk and I will try my best to finish the semester strong lol!

    I agree with Chanel. I have also been feeling extremely over-whelmed and stressed and it has been hard for me as well to gather up some motivation to finish my assignments up. I really am trying hard but I feel like there is so much work on my plate and its hard to determine which assignments should get priority since they are all so time consuming. Why can’t there be more then 24 hours in the day!?
