The Turntable Experience

Don’t you just love it when a favorite artist of yours creates something that really speaks to you? I think everyone has at least one movie or song or print that sticks with them and makes them feel more connected to the artists they admire. For me, my 2016 obsession has been my favorite band Animal Collective’s new album Painting With. And I have been even more enamored with the special bonus turntable slipmat that comes with the deluxe vinyl album that I pre-ordered in November. Now, I might sound crazy when I talk about how awesome this piece of art is (and I probably am), but hear me out! If you are into music, graphic design, AND animation, this 12” zoetropic turntable slipmat, designed by Elliot Schultz is an experience to be had!

The slipmat, which has an array of brightly colored geometric shapes merged with glossy cyan splashes of illustrated water, is one of the most whimsical pieces of rudimentary-style animation I have ever encountered. And I haven’t even seen it in person yet! That hasn’t stopped me from seeing it in action though, and you can too by watching the video below. Now go have an artistic experience!

Wow, this is so cool! It’s really mesmerizing and I’ve been staring at it for a good while. I know how much time, work, and skill goes into creating a piece like this and it’s really impressive. Thanks for sharing!
