A small symbol, a big mark.

The semi-colon generally represents a place in a sentence where the author could have ended it but decided to continue it by putting a semi-colon in. A non-profit, Project Semi-Colon, has now taken this symbol and made their brand around it. They want it to symbolize that the semi-colon represents you as the author and the sentence to be your life. To me, this is brilliant! The semi-colon is something that is simple, yet recognizable. As a designer, you are constantly trying to make a design that is just that. Many might find it cliché as well as just another way to get people to follow something like sheep in a big heard but here is why I think that it is something special.

The Semi-colon project is a non-profit based organization that is trying to spread awareness for mental health through the semi-colon. Their goal is to use the semi-colon to get the conversation started on mental health to rid of the stigma that surrounds it. Along with that, they are trying to use it as a way of to show support and strength for those who struggle with mental health. For a topic that is so huge and such a big problem these days such as suicide and mental health, the idea that such a small symbol can convey such a large message is pretty cool.

This design has inspired me to look at small things like the semi-colon and find a bigger meaning with in it. As a designer, I think that when you are designing something of any size you should think of the semi-colon project and try to apply their idea. Do you think this is a successful idea?

I think the message behind the semi-colon is a great and deep one. I have friends who have the tattoo, it means a lot to them and also to me. I love being able to find the greater meaning in something some.

Yes I do think it is a successful idea. You are right, it is amazing how a small icon can symbolize a huge meaning. I am not really into tattoos, but this I can totally see myself getting because of the meaning it holds.

This design, using a semi-colon is such a clever idea. Not only that but such a small thing has such an incredible meaning to those who have dealt with a mental illness. This is totally a successful idea.

I think this is a really wonderful idea, and one that gives so much meaning and has potential for a wide range of both universality and individual stories for people to resonate with. I especially love the fact that a non-profit is doing this. I think that it will be harder to differentiate my feelings about design and their meanings when companies that don’t have the same moral foundation begin to pick up on this trend. I think it will become a battle between liking something for its design and compartmentalizing the like of that design from our real feelings about the company. Tricky business

THIS IS BRILLIANT! I love this because it is so simple yet has a deeper meaning than what most people think. I think some of the best symbols are the ones that are simple objects or icons. Also, the semi colon can be used in other aspects and have various meanings or understandings for those with different illnesses or life struggles.
