“Don’t be that Guy”




Should I go vote? Well if everyone else is then I can’t be the only that doesn’t. It would seem immature and uneducated of me.

This is what comes to mind when viewing the AIGA Get Out The Vote poster designed by Annica Anderson. Voting is not something that you do because everyone else is, however this poster is designed for the people who put entertainment and fun above the future of our country. This poster at least gets them thinking about it, even if it’s for social reasons. The concept of this poster is well thought and the design, well executed.

The first thing that draws your attention in this poster is the familiar yellow and red color of the Lays chips bag. With the color towards the top, your eye naturally moves towards the bottom of the poster and sees the phone that’s resting on the chips bag. Then you see the word “vote” which then draws attention to the remote controller behind it. The layout and hierarchy of this poster successfully directs your eye and gives attention to the important parts. The word “vote” is made significantly large so that it is the first thing you read. Not only that but the placement of the word on top of the black remote creates a striking contrast which makes it pop out even more. Everything on the poster is connected to everything else, this makes moving through the poster faster and easier. Moreover, Anderson has allowed for enough space between the objects and enough space around the text for the eye to rest.

By using images of chips and a TV remote, Anderson places the viewer in a situation that they know they have been in and can relate to: You’re in the comforts of your home, watching TV and eating food and you don’t feel like putting in the effort of getting dressed and going somewhere. She makes the viewer feel that although it may be normal to brush off your family and friends for an episode of Game of Thrones, brushing off voting for the future of our country would not be right. It makes the viewer feel guilty for neglecting something they know is important. The words “Don’t be that guy” try to single you out, which is something that not one likes.

Although this poster is well done, there is one thing that I think could be improved. For one, I don’t think it’s necessary to put “don’t be that guy” in the keyboard of the phone. The two texts above send that message indirectly and it’s written above the word vote so the one in the phone seems redundant. Other than that, I feel Anderson has done and exceptional job in creating a poster that will get the attention of young voters and encourage them to think about it importance of voting.
