The real question is; can Instagram be a hub for art? Already, a few artists have taken to Instagram and creating art exhibits and series off what they find on Instagram. It has also become a way of showing off their new work. Richard Prince’s “New Portraits” was the artist’s controversial series—exhibited at New York’s Gagosian Gallery—consisted of pictures appropriated from the Instagram accounts of several celebrities, and models which were priced at $100,000 a piece.

Social media is a great place to share and get ideas heard, but can something as simple as a feed of photos become art?

Obviously, it can and have been evolving more and more. In 20 years’ art can all be on social media or be taken from social media, but will we be losing the physical aspect of art or of creating something? Personally, I love how we have physical art pieces that will live on for a while but the idea of social media as art is weird to me, it’s almost taboo.

What do you think about social media art? It is the next media for art?

Social Media Art is the new sub-category to the plethora of sub-categories that is classified under modern art. We create things daily, but the moment another person notices what we’ve created is when that item becomes “art” or in this case “social media art.” Therefore whenever you post something on social media and at least one other person sees it you are then a digital artist, like Kanye.

Today just about anything can be considered art in some way or form. Social media has been around for awhile now and people are finding new ways to make art off of it.

Kanye West aside, Instagram is a great place to get discovered as an artist! it’s also a great place to go for inspiration and stay up to date. One of my teachers was contacted by a gallery via Instagram, and now she has a perm. exhibition with them!

Instagram is where I get a lot of my inspiration from, there’s a good amount of great artists on it. But you do have to be careful because a friend of mine a project on ownership and apparently some sites can actually use your art without your permission, which I think is weird.

I think of the internet is places to find works that are temporary, works that are not hung in a gallery but appear in and out of your feed in at a quick pace. I find these pieces to be artworks that are posted online as art but may not fit the context of higher art.

I feel weird about the idea of “Instagram as Art” as well. Social media started out as a way of communicating and reaching out. But it has turned into so many different things, some good and some bad.

I think social media can be a hub for art. I believe as long a persons creativity be seen and heard, all is well. I think every artist deserves a platform for their work and if social media can give them that platform then thats great!
