Political Activism 101: Cultural Jamming with Ad Campaigns

Is your daily live polluted by boisterous advertisements? Do you want to make the public conscious of the contradictions with corporate America? Is the world’s current economic situation making you upset? Do you have a graphic design and art skills? If you answered YES to any of these questions, how about starting and employing your own underground revolutionary ad campaign via cultural jamming. Cultural Jamming is a form of political crusading using preexisting logos, advertisements, and mass media practices to expose the ironic truth about consumer culture. People can find the use of cultural jamming alive and well in underground subculture circles. However, this radical art and design form is not prevalent, or even imparted in public education. Look below at amazing examples, and be revolutionized.View more ad campaigns here. Debauchery in the streets!

I’m loving those examples. They speak the truth about the products we consume, unconscious of the consequences they’d eventually bring (McD’s for sure). I find that the products in the above examples you posted…I barely even think of consuming! I remember drinking some Vitamin Water back in high school…wasn’t too crazy about the taste to be honest.

Low key depressing, but at the same time the honesty is also refreshing.

Parody design is a great thing and gives an alternative perspective to what companies advertise. I have never heard the term Cultural Jamming until now. It is an interesting subject and designing like this helps us designers use a different part of our brain to spin an existing ad to reveal some truth about the message of media.
