PMS

If your a person who needs to make color decisions, the Pantone Matching System is your best friend! A PMS fan book or digital color libraries are a go-to when designing. Especially for picking and pairing brand colors. Note: it is best to invest in the printed PMS because it shows the true colors; The monitor gives an electronic representation.

PMS is the universal language of color. Humans naturally connect with the natural world of color and have mimicked it for years. Color systems were explored and expressed for centuries like Richard Waller’s 1686 Tabula Colorum Physiologica or Robert Ridgeway’s 1912 Color Standards and Color Nomenclature. Check out this article by Hyperallergic about how the development of Pantone came from a bird-bird based system and more.

However, in 1963 Pantone founder Lawrence Herbert created the PMS fan book that standardized the color spectrum and changed the design industry forever. The objective numeral based system clearly identifies, matches, and communicates colors to help designers, printers, companies, industries, and any person on the planet, easily identify and produce intelligent color.

Since 2000, the Pantone color of the year is announced each December and is symbolic of the mood of global culture of that year. 2017 is PMS 15-0343, Greenery.
