The Impact of Technology on Graphic Design

Graphic design is a field that is continuously growing and evolving. Pretty much everything around us involves design. Early forms of graphic design look completely different than what we as designers are accustomed to in today’s society, this is mostly due to the advancement of technology within the discipline. Graphic design hasn’t always been driven by technology though; before the use of computers design was made completely by hand. Steven Heller and Seymour Chwast were two early adopters of design being a process of printmaking. The first digital computer was built by John Mauchley and J. Persper Eckert in 1946, which was called ENIAC. This gave rise to some of the notable computers that we use in this generation today. The first computer that entered the graphic design business world was introduced in 1970 which led to the first Apple being created in 1977. This gave designers new possibilities and advancements in design which helped speed up workflow due to the fast processing speeds of these machines and the ability to use computing tools in new ways. As a graphic designer technology is at the forefront within my discipline and without it I don’t think graphic design would be what it is today.

Design is everywhere, and it definitely would not be the same as it is today without the power of technology. I fully agree with your point about how the evolution of computers has changed the design game, making it more accessible, convenient, and efficient for individuals in the discipline to create. Nicely written!

It’s made design more accessible. Anyone with a computer and data-manipulation software can work in the field. Even using free software such as GIMP, you can become a successful designer simply by YouTube videos and Google. All it takes is initiative.
