Make an Instagram Account

The power of social media cannot be stated enough. That reason is why I am surprised every time I ask a fellow design or art student for their Instagram account and they tell me they do not have one.

The importance of sharing your work online is important now more than ever. It is one of the easiest ways to get noticed out in the world for your work. Not having an account that shows who you are and what you do is basically giving away opportunities that you could have had to other artists.

The fact is that everyone is on social media. Even potential employers may sometimes ask to see your social media accounts these days. Not being on social media, or, not having some work shared is the world questioning you, “do you and your work even exist?”

Whether you like it or not, social media has become an essential part of this generation. It’s a great starting point for artists, especially as students, now more than ever. To abstain from it is denying yourself to some possibly important connections.

Have you made an Instagram account? If not, I’d suggest you get to it.

Social media apps like Instagram serve as a stellar and modern way to showcase personal work. Businesses have been increasingly using social media as an in-depth method to see what potential employees are all about, and for fellow designers and artists, it is important to keep up with the wave of advancing technology.

My problem is, I have a lot of social media accounts not under my real name because I run them for fun. I didn’t realize how much employers care about your social media presence until I was faced with that question in a phone interview for an internship a few months ago. I usually just tell people I don’t have accounts since I don’t run them professionally, but you’re right in this post– people are really out there looking for your content, and if they can’t find it, it reflects badly on you. I used to think that was super silly, but I’m forced to take it seriously now…

I think this is a really good point to emphasize. I agree with you and so do a lot of graphic design advice columns/blogs I’ve come across. Instagram may not be the only way you might showcase your work but it can be super useful in displaying your uniqueness as a designer or artist. It also reaches a greater demographics that could lead to potential commissions. Thank you for sharing!
