Design So Good It Makes You Crazy!

Starting out as an art student I didn’t have much appreciation for anything aesthetic. I liked certain things, but I had never put any thought into how things were created or designed. I was introduced to the idea of random objects having been thought out and designed by someone was learning about Marcel Duchamp. Learning about him blew my mind a little bit because he was taking these random objects and glorifying them. Like whoever thought of the aesthetic design or a urinal before his time. After that realization, I was able to notice the design takes place in almost everything. It drove me crazy because the nicer the design of something was the more I wanted it! An example of this would a bottle of elderberry juice that cost about $4.50. The bottle was stunning! It was in a small glass bottle that had a straight neck and a rounded bottom that was covered with a simple pink floral double-sided sticker. It was such an effective form design that it made me want to buy it for what it looked like.

I do this ALL of the time. I don’t need this bar of soap that I will literally never use– but the packaging is so pretty that I buy it anyway. It’s crazy and almost scary how powerful design can be in regards to advertising. I had a professor once who referred to advertising design as “brainwashing.” If you think about it, this statement is true. There has been so much time and effort into understanding the psychology behind certain aspects of design. And because of it, I now have had a bar of soap sitting on my desk for the past year.

I totally agree with the brainwashing thing, all advertising is deliberate. The point of selling things is to make as much money as possible. But, have you tried that lemonade yet? Cuz, IT IS DELICIOUS. I love Belvoir lemonade and they can brainwash me with their beautiful advertising anytime.

I have tried it! The quality of the drinks are very worth the price, but I wouldn’t have tried it if it wasn’t for the product design.

Yes! Exactly I still have the glass bottle adamant that I will use it for something amazing, but it currently lives under the kitchen sink.

I actually do this with websites for restaurants. If two restaurants have about the same ratings and both have food I want to eat, I base my decision on which one has the better website, especially if one looks very professional and the other one is so awful it makes me want to cry.
