AI Graphic Design

There’s a lot of fear and excitement surrounding AI technology. You know, because The Matrix and The Terminator are going to join forces and take over our world and species. That kind of fear. There’s also the fear of losing jobs to AI. One AI area that could affect future graphic designers is AI web building. WIX is a popular website builder that has an AI program. I’ve used it myself. Wired ran an article about a failed AI website builder called “The Grid” that basically just spit out color schemes. https://www.wired.com/story/when-websites-design-themselves/

But the technology is here and it will get better. WIX made a very trendy website for me that had all the classic design elements and was perfectly visually pleasing.

And this is where I don’t have fear. As of yet, the idea that AI can truly create from a place of innovative individuality is impossible. It will always be people who create “The Next Big Thing”. It’s people who are programming AI and it’s people who change the various landscapes of society; from graphic design to patient care to brake pads. AI can only assist us and reproduce our work, it can’t create from a place of true inspiration. So I’m not worried about my job as a creative being taken away, I’m just worried about killer robots.

I think that, to a degree, you should be worried about AI graphic design. While I do not foresee AI being able to take over aspects such as corporate branding, web design will be easy for them. Creating minimalistic websites is not hard once you understand the coding aspect. All AI would have to do is filter through what is considered a good website, similar to how it is already learning to filter though photos to better identify objects, people, and places.

While I don’t think they can do high creative jobs, yet, I recall a TED talk where google is developing a program that can recognize the word bird, and create a new image of bird on its own so the technology is definitely in being work on. It is likely something that will take a few years to develop though.

I had no idea this was going on. I have heard of wix before, but something like that still requires, at the very least, design skill. I did some digging and one website “The Grid” pissed me off. It is a website that has the computer completely make the entire website and design with the AI program named Molly. One of the quotes on the page was “She’s quirky, but will never ghost you, never charge more, never miss a deadline, never cower to your demands for a bigger logo.” EXCUSE ME! The reason we designers charge more is because your changes cost US time, the reason we might miss a deadline is because life happens, and if we “cower” IT’S PROBABLY BECAUSE THAT IS A BAD DESIGN DECISION AND YOU’LL END YOU LOOKING STUPID. Okay, that’s it. I needed to rent at this. Thanks for letting me know this is happening.

Wow, I am a bit familiar with Wix and its trendiness, but isn’t some designer behind it creating the interface and experience? I was never worried about AI, as robots cannot be creatives, what separates us as humans from animals and robots, is that we have the ability to express ourselves creatively.

When I first started in the graphic design field I thought that AI would take over the world. That opinion changed almost after I had to use Wix to make my first portfolio website. I very soon realized that websites like WIX are really complicated. I found it easier to code my own website then try to use WIX.
