The Power of Graphic Design

Graphic design is a very powerful tool that not many people are aware of. Graphic design has the power to change opinions and shape how we see the world around us. For example, when most people think of Donald Trump they think of an orange man, fake blond hair, and his iconic blue suit with some crazy hand gesture.

But why? Why do people automatically associate these things with him? If you look at a picture of Trump, you don’t see an umpa lumpa.

All these exaggerated features we associate with Donald Trump comes from the power illustrators and graphic designers poses. They are the ones that take a look at any person and can choose how they want them to be personified. The personification can be good or bad depending on the options the illustrator has on the person.  Once these illustrations catch on with people, the exaggerated features become very iconic and forever associated with them.

This is definitely something to evaluate as a designer. We have the power to make or break personal brands with how we chose to visually represent them. When designers unite with one voice around an issue like Trump they create and emphasizes an image and break down its integrity, or build it up in more positive situations. This is something that fascinates me.
