Cereal Boxes Are Designed To Trick You…

Do you remember tagging along with your parents to the grocery store, and having a cereal box stand out to you so much? Do you remember wanting to buy the Spiderman or Powerpuff Girls cereal box despite the flavor not being your favorite?  Well, you’ve been tricked, by good design!

Just as with many other design jobs, cereal box packaging is a very tedious process with much thought given to the target audience. Many studies have been conducted to find out why certain cereal boxes stand out to children so much, and the results are very interesting. Nowadays, cereal companies often use popular cartoon or movie characters to advertise their brand. In addition to good design, cereal boxes designed for children are always situated on the bottom shelves of the grocery store in such a way that kids can spot them themselves. Children who spot their favorite super hero on the front of a cereal box automatically want to buy it regardless of what flavor it is. This shows that good design alone is enough to attract people to buy something.

This branding technique could be used for healthier eating, too. I remember wanting to eat spinach after watching the famous cartoon character Popeye eat spinach to get stronger. So if catchy design packaging was combined with character branding to advertise healthier foods specifically to kids, we might actually make a positive difference in the way kids eat!

This is a really good insight, I am one of those kids that always wanted to get fruit loops and fruity pebbles for the bright colors and cartoon characters on the front covers. I also very much agree that because of the power that this marketing technique has on children it could be used to help get kid to develop better eating habits.

I also agree that design can be used in an advantageous way to help people eat healthier. I think design should make choices eaiser for people and not to trick them.
