Every Designer Should Be A Professional Photographer

Being a photographer allows for the designer to avoid outsourcing for photographs through stock photography websites like, which could cost a lot of money. Stock photography websites often don’t supply the exact image that a designer is looking for. For that reason, if a designer is skilled in photography, they can create a solution to a problem when the stock photography websites are not able to deliver. Being versatile in many creative outlets is always a good thing because you never known when the only person capable of executing your vision is yourself alone. Just like how being able to draw can help in the preliminary stages of a design, photography can help in the later stages of a design process.

The ability for a designer to execute any photograph that they envision for a project will help in creating the most accurate representation of their vision. Having the power to create the perfect image for a design can lead to better results and greater creativity.

Another advantage photography provides, is that it gets the designer out of the house or office to experience the world. Creativity is the accumulation of one’s experiences, so by adventuring in places that are unfamiliar will expand and refresh the mind of a creative. Without getting out of a work environment, a designer can become less creative because of the lack of new experiences. Whenever I found myself taking a walk to just take a break from a project, I always found that I had a new perspective on the project when I got back to it.

This is such a great post! I always feel so accomplished when I’m given a project and one of my photographs on storage fits my vision perfectly. Being able to control the camera and the visuals that you produce gives you even more power to your design.

I definitely think as a designer you have to know the basics of photography, and it helps to be a pro photographer as well. I do believe that certain projects might be too big for a designer to challenge in addition to deigning, in those cases it is perfectly fine to outsource professional photographers.
