House Industries

I have always loved lettering and typography, but never actually knew how to use it. My AVT 215 class over the summer really opened my eyes to a lot more opportunities with type, but also to a lot more resources to find out about type. One of our assignments was to create a poster about a type designer in that type designers style, USING a typeface they had created. I had been looking at a blog that had named the Best 200 Fonts of 2008, and found Studio Lettering, by Ken Barber of House Industries. I had no idea who Ken Barber was, or what House Industries was, but I soon fell in love with both. (Well, not the ACTUAL Ken Barber, but his work).

If you DON’T know about House, they’re fantastic. Ken Barber also teaches at MICA. House Industries, through the Type Director’s Club, is having a showing of their work in NYC. It’s open through the last ArtsBus, so if you’re going on the November 14th ArtsBus, CHECK IT OUT. It’s going to be fantastic.

Do you have a link to the Best 200 fonts? I’d like to see more, so that it could help inspire me for my next design. Also is studio lettering a font you can use on a text or are they only on the little blocks children used to play with. That type brings me back to my childhood at my grandparents house.
