Practice Makes Perfect

I don’t have any real client experience. I’ve been a full time student and maintained a part/full time job all through college. This hasn’t left me much time to go out on my own to find clients to do “real life” design work. I know there are others of you out there who are in the same situation as me. So what are we going to put in our portfolios, other than our student work?

I decided that I need to take the initiative and find some projects to do on my own. If anything, the practice will be beneficial, whether or not the pieces end up in my portfolio. Problem is, it’s kind of hard to come up with a project idea on your own.

While I was looking online this afternoon, I came across an article on about.com that has a great list of potential side project ideas. Whether you are looking for ways to fill the gaps in your portfolio, or are just looking to keep your creativity flowing during the holidays, I think this article has some great ideas on graphic design projects you can do in your own time.

This is a great idea for spare time over the holidays. I am in the same boat as you-school full-time and a part-time job to help pay the bills, so there really aren’t enough hours in the day.

Agreed! Thanks for the site, too. I’ve gotten ideas from other people like designing a menu for a restaurant and that kind of thing, but I’ve always wanted more ideas.

Thanks for sharing! I totally agree that building your portfolio with projects other than school related ones is a good idea. I will check the sight out over the holiday break!

I definitely agree!… I don’t have a full-time job but I do have 2 part-time jobs and that’s hard enough trying to do outside work to balance. Thanks for the link!

Thanks for sharing. As everyone has mentioned I think between working and school it’s hard to find spare time. During the break now would be a good time to work on some extra assignments and I think this is very beneficial.
