Packaging is everything

When I tell people that I am trying to become a designer, they usually think I am just in charge of putting colorful letters onto a box. I explain that designing a logo or cover for a company is a lot more work than just putting words onto a package. If a company asks for a design for their packages and it isn’t designed correctly, it could make or break that product. In the picture attached you can see that it is a black raspberry jam jar. I believe that the company wanted to say that the jam tastes like how grandma would make it, but from how it is placed, it’s just reads “tastes like grandma.” At first glance, I thought it was hilarious that they would print these for their jars. Even just simple placement of a group of texts can make a simple jam look all wrong.

This post is a great reminder that branding and logos are a serious matter and can benefit from multiple critiques like other forms of art. It is amazing to think how many people must have seen the jam jar label before it went to print and that the company did not realize the irony and lack of clarity in their message. I don’t believe that I would buy this jam if given a choice between brands because it seems so amateurish.
