Art and Design

I think art is the backbone of design. Of course this completely goes against my design teacher’s saying: “you don’t have to know how to draw to be a good designer.” Well, I disagree. I think being a painter and a good illustrator make a good designer. I think it opens up the mind to understand the elements of design/art better. Elements like color, line, texture and composition. Without these any art or design piece will be lost. Gosh, I remember the oh-so-many sketches we had to do in art class. As tiresome as they were, I now understand their importance. I see people jump onto a computer with an idea in their head and spend so much time perfecting a piece that they eventually will call an unsuccessful sketch and drag the ‘sketch’ file into the trash can. Technology is great but the key is in the paper and the pencil.
