“Am I filling my life with design, or my design with life?”

A friend sent me a link to this blog the other day, and I thought it was worth posting/discussing.

Growing up, I always loved doing D.I.Y. craft projects at home for fun…that could be the reason why I found graphic design such an appealing career for me. I still enjoy looking at blogs with “how-to” D.I.Y. projects, especially the “before and after” photos (such as Design*Sponge). I think it’s important to practice design in everyday life, not just for work and projects for class. As a designer, I am constantly thinking about design. I mean, it surrounds us, literally. We really can’t escape. I find these D.I.Y. projects to be a fun and refreshing way to practice design without the pressure of deadlines and grades, and even clients. Create a greeting card for a friend or re-vamp your room with some crafty window treatments.

Maybe it’s just me, maybe it’s because I’m a girl and love this kind of crafty “stuff,” but design really is everywhere, and you won’t get better if you don’t continue to practice it every single day. It doesn’t have to be a portfolio piece, just do it for your own personal benefit and growth as a designer. Who knows what will inspire and motivate you for your next big idea or “Ah-ha!” moment. Sometimes you find the most creative ideas in the most unlikely places.
