The Act of Schmoozing

When reflecting on previous work experiences, we can usually identify lessons we learned in each unique working environment and/or with work projects. I, for one, can look back on my last job and honestly say that the biggest lesson learned was how to successfully schmooze. Schmooze? Yes, I am serious, I believe that I actually learned how to schmooze.

I have no idea how or when it happened but I woke up one morning and realized, damn, I’m a good schmoozer!

When I thought of writing this piece, I hesitated because for many, schmoozing is perceived negatively. The act of schmoozing conveys somewhat of a phony, rather than a genuine, act. However, I believe otherwise. As dictionary.com lists, it is the act of conversing casually, especially in order to gain an advantage or make a social connection.

Picture 5I find it interesting that AIGA-DC has a set networking event, in essence, happy hour, that they call ‘Schmooze Day’ (which by the way, is an amazing opportunity to schmooze). Don’t get me wrong, my intentions are good, all-around. No matter who I am speaking with or what the desired outcome may be, I am always genuine. The only change is that now I have my eye set on the desired outcome. In essence, schmoozing the act of making others feel special and making sure you are getting yourself out there, which is important for beginning designers.
