Missed Opportunity

Brion’s Grille has a new burger challenge and they needed a t-shirt to be designed for people who win. I’m a friend of the owner’s daughter and she sent me a message offering me the opportunity to do the design for the t-shirt. I immediately accepted the offer, but about a week after I accepted I realized that with my class schedule this semester I had no free time to do this design so I had to call her back and back out of the deal. I’m kind of disappointed that I was unable to go through with it, but there really was nowhere to fit it into my schedule.

I definitely feel your pain. I read emails all the time about design opportunities and as much as I need the work to add to my portfolio, I have no time to do it. It is really hard for students to find work, and when we do we often do not even have time to do it. Still, school has to be our first priority right now so I think you made the right decision.

I am constantly getting emails about people who need photographers, need business cards, need posters, and not only emails but opportunities from people I know at work or school. And i’m constantly letting myself down as well. As much as I would LOVE to create their designs I have no time in between full scheduled work days and back to back classes during the week. But what you have to make sure of is that you prioritize what’s really important for you. Even if it means sitting it out for the weekend and getting it done. You’ll have added something new to your portfolio and you now have a client who will hopefully pass the word around about your work.
