Typophile: An Invaluable Resource

For those of you, (like me) who are obsessed with type—as well as those who are at least interested in GOOD type, Typophile is a wonderland. Typophile is a message board that regularly dissects designs, typefaces, and takes up current issues with type. Have you ever had trouble thinking of a typeface for a certain project? Or, like in my case, are you ever trying to look for alternatives to popular or overused typefaces (e.g. Trajan Pro, Helvetica, Futura) that have the same feel as the original? Then this place is for you! As well as being such a helpful resource, Typophile has a large community of graphic designers and typographers, including some famous (or in Vincent Connare’s case, infamous) professionals. There are some incredibly helpful existing threads, including one on quintessential typefaces. In any case, this message board is a great place to learn about the up-and-coming issues in the type world, and is really helpful if you want to further educate yourself in typography.

Someone who is often overwhelmed by type, this is an awesome find! Thank you for sharing it. I also recommend dafont.com because it lets users download and use types, even if some are very stereotypical, it often helps you when you are stuck. It gives you the type name written in the typeface and often most are free to download.

Yeah, dafont.com can be useful in some cases; you also have to be careful though, because oftentimes they will have fonts ripped off from the original. As an alternative, type designers will sometimes release a new font for free (usually for a limited time) as well. There is also a really helpful FAQ on Typophile about this, including some legit free fonts released by type designers.

This is a great site. I’d never heard of it before but I visited it today and there is definitely a lot to choose from. They have a lot of modern fresh looking types that don’t really resemble the same boring overused fonts that you see everyday. Thanks for sharing this! I’m for sure going to use this site for references!
