Royalty Free Illustrations?

Intersting site:

I stumbled across this website the other day while looking for some google images, and it seemed like an interesting idea.

Artists can load their portfolios onto this site, and set their own prices for prints, jpeg images of various sizes, and even the original vector files.

The site seems like a great idea, as it both allows artists to display their work, while setting up a safe environment for buyers to purchase illustrations and clipart specific to their needs.

The not so great part about this site is the prices for the images. Most of the featured artists charge upwards of $50 for 4000 by 4000 pixel jpeg files, and at least $100 for the vector graphics files. Normally I am against devaluing graphic design or illustration work, but this seems ridiculous to me. It would be one thing if these artists were really good, but most of the images I saw on the site were lackluster at best. And since multiple clients have the opportunity to purchase these images, I would think that the artists could maybe mark down their ridiculous prices.

I’m surprised this site is even up. With google and yahoo searches for “free” images available, I’m surprised that people would actually pay for images taken off of the internet.

It is a good idea, especially if the art is of really good quality, but if the images are how you describe them, then it seems like a waste of cash on the purchasers part.

With images that can be purchased to multiple customers, you would wonder why the prices are so high. I could understand if they were on a first come first serve basis, but for the amount of people buying, the price could be considerably lower.

I checked out the site too and images are a bit horrendous to be paid for. These are clipart images I would have enjoyed using in my powerpoint presentation when I was 10 or something.

I hate the term “royalty-free” that the site uses to describe themselves because nothing is free about the copy-right pictorials. I do like the ClipartOf logo however, it’s rather familiar. I’m sure someone without an artistic/designer eye or another 10 year old would find this site useful though.
