Design Block

Lately I have been in a design slump. Usually whenever I have a project, my ideas flow quicker than my pencil can sketch. However, recently my creativity has been hiding out. I just got a new project and I have been having trouble thinking of ideas.

After sitting there staring at a blank sketch pad for a while, I started to look up inspiration online. I went to some sites I know of that show designers work and I even googled random things. Still nothing. I got little sparks here and there, but no fireworks. I decided to go through my old work. I looked through old projects, design home works, photography, paintings, and even old sketches. Surprisingly, this worked! Seeing all of my old ideas and evaluating what worked and what didn’t work inspired a lot of new ideas. Even my old sketches helped me come up with a few beginnings. My own work helped me escape design block.

That’s an awesome idea! I’ve certainly come across design block myself. Recently ,I’ve started a collection of designs that i think are great and I’ll look at it for inspiration sometimes. I’ve never thought about going back to your own work for inspiration but from here on out, I’ll use that as well. Thanks!

I always love going through my old sketchbooks for just that reason – sometimes I find little gems that I have all but forgotten about, and they really inspire me. Great solution!

I know what you mean, when you get a design block and ideas are not flowing. There is nothing more inspirational than searching through your own collection to generate greater ideas. And it is also as though you are reaffirming yourself that you are indeed exceptional, skillful, and useful. For me it’s like a complete confidence-booster, simply knowing you can do great work makes you bold and excited to do even more.

I have never tried this but can definitely see how this may help. I think maybe sometimes you just need a little reminding of your style and what you do best. I know it is good to see what other people are doing but sometimes I get nervous to look elsewhere for inspiration in fear that I will want to do exactly what they did and will lose my personal brand.
