Last Spring during the AIGA portfolio review event, one of the AIGA DC chapter members gave a speech about his experience now as a graphic designer. He talked about things that you have to develop as a student before you go out of school. I really liked his speech and I found it very effective, so I thought it would be a good idea to learn from his experience and share it with you. The title of his speech was:

5 things I wish I have done more when I was in school

1. I wish I read more. So,

  • be divers
  • read in all subjects

2. Write more

  • develop more your vocabulary
  • improve your personal communication

3. Take more risks

  • Explore different design thinking
  • Explore different mediums

4. Network earlier

  • Use Linkden or similar resources
  • Do not rely only on the technology.. go in person
  • Involve in events
  • Involve in clubs

5. Lose the ego

  • Have confident, not ego

These are all really good tips to base your career around! I know that networking is important, but I did not even think about using Linkden or getting involved in events/clubs. I figured I would just meet people along the way that would be “in’s” to places.
Also, taking more risks is a great point. As designers, we need to think outside the box, and taking risks is the way to do it!
