Design vs Technology

The other day I had a discussion with a friend of mine about which is more important when
it comes to the products of Apple, the design or the engineering. I am not saying that the
engineering aspect of the products is vital; however, I believe that if they didn’t have the right
designs, they will not be as successful as they are today!
My friend argues that if it wasn’t for Apple’s advanced technology, they wouldn’t have been so
successful;  on the other hand I think that even though Apple has some amazing technologies, if
they do not keep up the good work when it comes to the design, one or more of their competitors
would most likely take their leading position. For example, if we consider the latest Iphone 4
(which for some weird reason is mistakenly thought of as a 4g phone even though its only a
3g) is a pretty cool phone, however if Apple did not change the design of it and added a couple
of touches to how it looks, the new features(like the camera on the front and a couple of small
additions to the software) were not going to make it against the new “droid” operating system
that a couple of phones from all of the big cell phone companies have adopted. The droid
operating system -in my opinion- surpassed “iOS” (Apple’s software used on the Iphone, Ipod,
Ipad and so on) it has way more features that the iOS and it looks more user-friendly. As an
Iphone user, I love how it works, however I still think that Apple has to do much more to its
design for it to stay in the competition!

I agree with you. It seems to me that Apple’s appeal is in the “sleekness” of their design. As far as hardware is concerned, Apple products are extremely expensive for the hardware inside. You can generally build a computer that is a PC that is about 1/2 the price of a Mac with the same system specs.
