Chubby beauty

There are so many different standards of the meaning of beauty that people possess around the world, and not everyone agrees on who is beautiful and who is not. It is said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder, for some to be beautiful could be round big eyes, big lips, small jaws, for others long necks, lots of tattoos, excessive jewelry , etc.

Fernando Botero, a Colombian painter and sculpture finds beauty in chubbier images. He introduced inflated forms and exaggeratedly  puffed up human figures, his paintings usually have a social or political commentary as well. I find interesting the twist he has given to his art by making his work “chubby.”

Here are some of the images from his work

I agree that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. It would seem as if this artist truly grasps that concept, and does not formulate his belief in beauty based on the “cookie-cutter”, overly-photoshopped pictures our society is saturated with. I especially find the chubby Mona Lisa to be comical. It takes such a common image and changes it up into a different type of beauty, which completely alters the piece. This artist certainly is interesting.

I have seen lots of chubby images, some of which were just making fun. But sculpture, wow, this artist Botero really takes chubby beauty seriously. This kind of diversity is certainly worthy of respect.
