Design is everywhere, but I didn’t realize it

It did not ever occur to me before I started taking my art and design classes that everything has a creator that thought about the shape and color of every single material thing that we have in life. Whether the design was given a lot of thought or just a fleeting thought, things did not just pop up being the shape and color that it is.
I guess I knew this on a very shallow level when I was younger and just looking at these things. I now stop to look at different signs, or typefaces or any sort of interesting design that catches my eye and think ‘Someone actually had to stop and think about this, this is someone’s creation.’
Thought has gone into every single thing in our material world, not just things that are obvious, like magazine and website or clothes, but things like a street sign, a mouse pad, a remote control, a tube of toothpaste, or a rug. Things that are a part of our everyday lives but that are taken for granted, that is just there, had time and thought put into them; and to me, that is a very powerful thought.

I agree it is an important realization to make as a designer. Not only to stop and appreciate things that are visually pleasing or well crafted but also to think about what makes them that way.

Realizing this also gives you a chance to look out at the world and gain ideas or critique what’s around you.

It’s kind of a blessing in disguise; I have also started to see design everywhere and tend to analyze lots of graphic elements in the world.
