The importance of bad design.

As designers we’re probably always on the look out for good design. There are things that will catch our eye as we walk down the street or when we sit down to eat. (Ha! That rhymed!) These things will often inspire us but what about things that are ugly, poorly designed and repulse us? You might think the world would be a better place if they just didn’t exist. But in truth these unfortunate creations could be considered just as influential to us if not more so. Poor design gives us an even greater appreciation for the things that are designed well. It also gives us a good understanding of what not to do. It goes back to the ancient idea of balance, Yin and Yang, Light and Dark, Good and Evil, Good design and Ugly design. Think about that next time you see something that’s designed really bad.

Oh that is a horrible design… take it down! j/k I think it is great that you posted a bad design so designers like us can make sure we do not EVER do anything ugly like that.

I really enjoy the point that you just made. We often overlook or criticize bad design. Criticizing it is ok, but its important that we learn from the mistakes in front of us.

Very well thought, and good points on when it comes bad designing leads to good designing for future designers. I’ll keep that in mind in case I ever encounter a poor, bad, or even ugly design (or all the above, whichever).
