Proximity -> Creativity

I went to NYC with the AIGA-GMU group, and one of the coolest places we visited was called Studiomates. We went there to visit the bloggers Swiss Miss and Lucky So and So, but once we got there, we found out that we had entered into the center of the design blogging world. Not only were Tina from Swiss Miss and Jessi from Lucky So and So there, blogger/designer Frank Chimero as well as the writers of the book series A Book Apart, as well as the start-up Tattly. There were over 30 creatives working one space, lovingly called Studiomates, each creative working on their own individual projects. It was amazing to me to see how each designer retained their individuality amidst so many other incredibly talented designers. It definitely shattered my idea that bloggers always blog alone from coffee shops. These designer/bloggers realized that they are most creative when they are with other creatives. It reminded me that genius is never isolated–it takes a village! I was encouraged to make sure I am spending time with other creatives I respect, because enthusiasm and creativity, I firmly believe, is contagious.

    You’re so right Adey. I posted an entry that harks back to this post of yours. The idea that it takes a village is something that I struggled with for a long time but now know it is inevitable and 100% necessary to work and rub elbows with designers in order to produce better work.
