Design is My Version of Japanese

As someone who is out of her element with designers, I decided to see if I could grasp the definition of design.

According to Google, design is a plan for a “building, garment or other object before it is built…” A building, garment or other object? Is everyone in this class making blueprints? I could be wrong but I’m pretty sure I’ve seen them all designing posters, business cards and book covers. I don’t remember any dresses, chairs or storage unit mock-ups.

Google also mentioned that design shows functionality. Wait a minute. The light bulb went off. Posters show how movies will function by highlighting key elements, actors, and a tag line.  Business cards tell the clients that the company will function in a clean, professional and organized manner. It now makes sense that graphic designers are making concise visual representations of how things are going to work.

(The word limit killed my post! The first one was better)
