Auto-play Music On Websites

So the other day I was browsing some portfolio websites and several of them had music that was on auto-play when you’d visit their website. Most of the ones I came across had a pretty obvious button to either stop the music or turn it down, compared to making you have to mute your computer or close the webpage to stop the noise. I know that there are some people who absolutely hate auto-play on websites and it causes them to close the site immediately. I know auto-play is pretty popular for individual Tumblr pages, but I am wondering if it’s considered “professional” to have music playing on webpages such as portfolios. Personally I enjoy hearing the music and it gives me more of a feel of the personality of the webpage depending on the type of music. Not to mention if I really hate the song I can conveniently move my cursor a few inches to turn it off or just mute my computer (though they really should have a pause/stop button). I understand how certain music could get really bothersome, but I personally just don’t see why people get so upset over the use of auto-play on websites.

Here are 2 sites that have music on them & use autoplay:

  1. When I first read this I thought of pop-ups. Whenever I hear noise coming out of my laptop that isn’t my own music, my first instinct is to X out the pop-up. Whenever a tumblr has music I think it is corny or unprofessional in most cases. The IE Studio website wasn’t terrible. It set a mood of what the studio is like and wasn’t a recognizable song, which I think works well.

I am on Tumblr very frequently and that is something that gets on my nerves. I hate having to click through blogs with songs on auto-play because unless they are shuffled, the same beginning of the song will repeat when you click on another link on their blog!

Oh man, I hate autoplay! It’s definitely not professional for an portfolio. And whenever it starts I have to go through all my tabs to find which website it’s on. Super annoying!
